Smokey, poised to conquer

It's nice to be able to report favourably on an album a Bradford band who are being launched with the full might of the rock world's publicity machine.
The band are Smokey (formerly Kindness, formerly The Elizabethans), who have been taken up and groomed for stardom by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, the men behind the success of, among others, Suzi Quatro and Mud.
The album, on the Rak label, is called "Pass It Around" and it was released yesterday amid a blaze of music-paper advertising and clever promotional gimmickry.
The title track is a very commercial Chapman/Chinn composition that's bound to make it into the charts and presents lead singer Chris Norman as a sort of cross between Noddy Holder and Paul Rodgers. There's another Chapman/Chinn composition on side 2, "I Do Declare", a long rock 'n' roller that proceeds at a sturdy pace.
The other tracks - and there are 13 on the album - were all written by the band members. "Daydreamin'" is a medium-fast number with successful vocal harmonies. "Oh Well, Oh Well" is a pleasant, swingalong, singalong song with acoustic accompaniment and, again, harmony vocal backing. It's followed by "My Woman", a beautiful, gentle ballad with Chris Norman's voice soothing and showing amazing versatility. "It Makes Money" is a bouncy attack on critics. Mmmmm!
"Headspin" finds Norman in raucous mood again with a rather repetitive lament, an apology to an amorous girlfriend for the flesh being weak although the spirit is willing - and it's all the fault of alcohol. So be warned, young man!
"Going Tomorrow" races along, driven by Pete Spencer's infectious drum beat. On a moving little song about memories of a dead father, "Don't Turn Out Your Light", quiet verses erupt into fast chorus harmonies. "Will You Love Me" is a rocker about getting old - a sort of heavy version of "When I'm 64".
Up to now the songs have been written either by the band as a whole or by Norman and Spencer. The last three tracks on the album are by lead guitarist Alan Silson, who takes over the lead vocals for "A Day at the Mother-in-Law's", a foot- tapper with 'phone and bus sound effects that takes a sympathetic look at a much-abused member of the family. There's a country mood to "The Coldest Night", while "Shy Guy" is very reminiscent of the Beatles in their "Help!" days.
In fact, it's hard at times to avoid comparison with the Beatles. Chapman and Chinn must be hoping that Smokey achieve even a fraction of that band's success. Certainly, on the basis of this album, they've lavished their money on a winner.

Заглавный трек – очень коммерческая композиция Чапмена/Чинна, которая обязательно попадет в чарты и представляет вокалиста Криса Нормана как нечто среднее между Нодди Холдером и Полом Роджерсом. На второй стороне есть еще одна композиция Чапмена/Чинна, "I Do Declare", длинная рок-н-ролльная композиция с устойчивым темпом.
Остальные треки – а их на альбоме 13 – написаны участниками группы. "Daydreamin'" – песня умеренного темпа с прекрасным полифоническим пением. "Oh Well, Oh Well" – приятная песня, под которую можно танцевать и которой можно подпевать, с акустическим аккомпанементом и, опять же, полифоническим вокалом. За ней следует "My Woman", красивая, нежная баллада, где голос Криса Нормана успокаивает и показывает удивительную универсальность. "It Makes Money" – это заводная атака на критиков. Ммммм!
На "Headspin" Норман снова поет хриплым голосом постоянно повторяющуюся жалобу, извинение перед влюбленной подругой за то, что «плоть немощна, хотя дух силен» – и все это из-за алкоголя. Так что вас предупредили, молодой человек!
"Going Tomorrow" мчится вперед, движимая заразительным барабанным ритмом Пита Спенсера. В трогательной песне-воспоминании об умершем отце "Don't Turn Out Your Light" медленные куплеты переходят в быстрые хоровые припевы. "Will You Love Me" - это роковая песня о старении - своего рода утяжеленная версия "When I'm 64".
До сих пор песни были написаны либо группой в целом, либо Норманом и Спенсером. Последние три трека на альбоме написаны соло гитаристом Аланом Силсоном, который сам поет в "A Day at the Mother-in-Law's", ритмичной песенке со звуками телефонного звонка и автобуса, где сочувствует затюканному члену семьи. В "The Coldest Night" есть настроение кантри, в то время как "Shy Guy" очень напоминает The Beatles времен "Help!".
На самом деле, порой трудно избежать сравнения с The Beatles. Чапмен и Чинн, должно быть, надеются, что Smokey добьются хотя бы части успеха той группы. Конечно, судя по этому альбому, они поставили свои деньги на победителя.
